WHAT IS
CHRONIC DISEASE PREVENTION?
Identifying the root cause and contributing factors of chronic disease,
implementing community-based programs to address the concern, and
supporting policy which promotes good health. Chronic diseases with
preventable risk factors include heart disease, diabetes, and lung
disease (asthma).
WHAT ARE THE RISK FACTORS FOR CHRONIC DISEASE?
The
Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has identified the
following behaviors that put people at risk for chronic disease and
premature death:

Smoking and other tobacco use

High-fat, low fiber diet
-
Physically inactive
-
Lack
of preventative health services (cancer screenings, cholesterol checks,
blood pressure checks

related to chronic disease:

partners with community organizations to promote smoke free living.
CESSATION SUPPORT
An important resource
is the toll-free Wisconsin Quit Line which is reached by calling 1-800-270-STOP.
Other smoking cessation programs in the local area can be located on the
Community Action for Tobacco Free Living as listed.

COMMUNITY PARTNERSHIPS
The Tobacco Control
Resource Center for Wisconsin (TCRCW) - TCRCW is an online
resource for Wisconsin Tobacco control coalitions and advocates.
Community Action for Healthy Living - A coalition of
approximately 200 individuals and organizations serving Calumet,
Outagamie County and the City of Appleton.
Fighting
Against Corporate Tobacco (FACT) - A youth lead movement in
Wisconsin.
ENVIRONMENTAL TOBACCO SMOKE (Secondhand Smoke)
Each year exposures to secondhand smoke causes
150,000 to 300,000 respiratory infections such a pneumonia and
bronchitis in children under 18 months. Children exposed to
second hand smoke at home are ore likely to have middle-ear infections.
Each year mothers who
smoke at least ten
cigarettes a day can actually cause between 8,000 and 26,000 new cases
of asthma among their children.
Infants are three times
more likely to die from Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) if their
mothers smoke during and after pregnancy.
