IMPORTANT TRAVEL NOTICE
CHANGE IN INTERNATIONAL TRAVEL REQUIREMENTS
Federal officials from the U.S. Department of State have announced that due to Homeland Security provisions, U.S. citizens will soon be required to produce passports for re-entry into the United States from countries that formerly only required a birth certificate.
Currently: All U.S. citizens must show proof of identity and proof of U.S. citizenship when entering the United States from Canada, Mexico, Bermuda and the countries of the Caribbean by land or sea.
June 1, 2009, the U.S. government will implement the full requirements of the land and sea phase of the Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative. The proposed rules require most U.S. citizens entering the United States at sea or land ports of entry to have a passport, passport card, or other travel document approved by the Department of Homeland Security.
For information on how to obtain a passport, go to http://travel.state.gov or call the U.S. National Passport Information Center: 1-877-4USA-PPT; TDD/TTY: 1-888-874-7793.
This information is subject to change and citizens are encouraged to use the above website and phone numbers for further updates.
The passport requirement does NOT apply to U.S. citizens traveling to or returning directly from a U.S. territory. U.S. citizens returning directly from a U.S. territory are not considered to have left the United States and do not need to present a passport. U.S. territories include the following: Guam, Puerto Rico, the U.S. Virgin Islands, American Samoa, Swains Island, and the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands. |
